The Ethical Commitment adopted by Universidad Nacional de Colombia as per Resolution 11 of 2018, issued by the University’s Presidency, aims to promote conducts that contribute to the welfare of the university, of its members, and of the society who makes the university possible. From an environmental perspective, the Ethical Values are interpreted as follows:
The value of membership is based on love for UNAL, which leads the members of the university community to feel like members of a shared space and to commit themselves to common goals, aspirations, values, and ideals that contribute to excellence from its work, especially focused on environmental sustainability.
Equity, based on justice, involves each member of the UNAL university community having their rights and duties recognized in environmental matters, considering a fair distribution according to each particular situation and context and avoiding discrimination for issues related to environmental thinking.
Honesty implicitly entails sincerity, transparency, coherence, and righteousness. This is reflected in the ability to speak truthfully and to maintain coherence between thoughts and actions in relation to the environment. Honesty is also an ally to fight against any act of corruption that threatens the environment.
Solidarity is reflected in teamwork oriented towards preserving the environment as irreplaceable heritage and in accompanying people or social groups in their life projects aimed at this purpose; this translates into feelings of empathy, affection, and trust.
Responsibility involves behaving freely, promoted by the will and the understanding of the duties and rights that each person has. Therefore, it leads to excellence in all the activities that are carried out, based on the understanding that one’s own acts affect the others, one's institution, society, and the sustainability of the environment.
Respect is based on recognizing that people and those who inhabit their environments are ends in themselves and not means to meet ends. This means that all beings possess dignity, since they are subjects and not objects and, therefore, deserve attention and care. This value is associated with tolerance, good treatment, pluralism, and harmonious coexistence among all species that inhabit the earth.
Dialogue as an ethical value manifests itself in those actions that start from recognizing other people as valid interlocutors, as worthy human beings who have the freedom to express opinions, criticisms, and disagreements according to their relationship with the environment. As a tool for oral or written communication, it facilitates dispute resolution through consensus among those who think differently to encourage awareness regarding the protection and care of the environment.
