The water footprint comprises both the volume of fresh water consumed, used, and polluted directly by daily activities and the volume of water used in the production of the goods and services that are consumed.

This footprint includes two dimensions: one direct and one indirect, each including three types of water footprint: blue, gray and green:

• Blue: volume of water that is evaporated, incorporated, or taken from one body of water.
• Gray: volume of water necessary to assimilate the pollutant load of the generated wastewater, according to acceptable parameters of local regulations.
• Green: volume of water consumed in agricultural products.
