The construction of a concept that identifies the environmental criteria both for the subjects taught and for the research and extension activities is sustained by transversal elements that compose the Environmental Management System (EMS, SGA for its acronym in Spanish). This concept is based on the identification of environmental issues from different currents of thought, which comprise the plurality of knowledge, the conception of sustainability, and the mission of Universidad Nacional de Colombia to solve those problems; conditions for human training and environmentally responsible criteria are also promoted within the university community through this process.
The concept of environmental criteria incorporates the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set forth by the United Nations by orienting the EMS towards eco-sustainable campus requirements and continuous improvement of environmental performance. This aims to strengthen the environmental dimension in the academic, research, and extension aspects, as well as in the management of goods and services of the institutional work of the university; in doing so, the first institution of higher studies in Colombia makes a contribution to achieving the global goals that surround the SDGs.
